Attendance and Drop Policy

How does COOLSchool track attendance?

Our goal is for each student to successfully complete each course and obtain credit. Once a course is begun, it is important to establish regular times to work on the course, and to communicate with your teacher each week. Students who do not set and follow a regular pattern tend not to complete the course work and to eventually withdraw or be dropped from the course.

To meet Oregon Attendance Laws and to encourage successful completion of a course, COOLSchool has the following attendance policies:
  1. The five-day and 10-day rules: We expect students to participate at least once every five days. If a student doesn't participate at least once in each 10-day period, the student is at risk of being dropped from the class unless previous arrangements have been made with the teacher and COOLSchool administration.

  2. Teachers will take attendance at least once each week. Each Monday during the school year, the registrar will process attendance data for the week prior. Reports will be sent to school districts that submit a request to the registrar.

  3. Attendance is based on the student's participation in the course. Attendance will be evidenced by submitting assignments, participating in any discussions, or communication with the teacher or other students in the course.

  4. In case of technical difficulties, the student must immediately notify COOLSchool support staff (cs-support@coolschool.k12.or.us). This will help us to keep the student involved in the course and account for any anomolies in the attendance data.

  5. Individual COOLSchool teachers may have attendance requirements in addition to those stated above.

What is COOLSchool's drop/withdrawal policy?

Students can withdraw from a COOLSchool course by contacting registrar@coolschool.k12.or.us

A withdrawal from a course is considered a termination. There are two types of terminations:
  1. Termination with refund (for Regular Education Courses only). Tuition will be refunded, minus a $15 processing fee (or $40 for courses licensed from Florida Virtual School), if a student contacts the registrar not more than 10 school days after the student's "start date."

Within the 10-day period, if you determine that another course (regular or credit recovery) might better serve your student, COOLSchool will switch a student to a new course at no charge to the individual or institution.

If for some reason, up to 30 days from the student's "start date," the student has not engaged the teacher, i.e., submitted assignments to be graded or participated in other activities online that require teacher input, COOLSchool will allow that student to withdraw and be charged only the processing fee mentioned above.

For Credit Recovery courses: Tuition will be refunded, minus a $15 processing fee, if a student contacts the registrar not more than 10 school days after his or her class start date.

  2. Termination with no refund (for Regular Education courses). The student didn't pay, withdrew from the course after 30 days, or didn't complete the course work within the allowable time.

For Credit Recovery courses: The student didn't pay, withdrew from the course after 10 days, or didn't complete the course work during the allowable time.

Terminated students will receive no grade unless they have made arrangements with the teacher and COOLSchool administration to receive only partial credit for a course.
