Teacher Profile
SARAH ELIZABETH MOCK
I have lived in Oregon since 1995. Before that I lived in a variety of places including Chapel Hill, North Carolina; Aberystwyth, Wales (Great Britain), and New York City. I first moved to New York to attend New York University which I chose because my father, who is a diehard New Yorker, had pined for New York for years. I thought that I wanted to be there as badly as he did. Once I got there, I found out that I loved being outside in nature too much and didn't have enough opportunities in the city. Ever since then, I have lived in places that have spectacular natural beauty, interesting ecosystems, and fascinating geologic histories.
I have taught General Science in Eighth Grade in North Carolina and Earth Science and Environmental Science at Lakeridge High School in Lake Oswego. I have also taught college classes in Geology at the University of North Carolina and I teach Field Geology and Teacher Education classes at Lewis and Clark College in Portland. Field Geology classes are my favorite classes to teach, because I get to spend several days camping in the desert or mountains of Eastern Oregon and somebody pays me to do it. I still can't get over that!
I am currently working from home because I have chosen to stay home with my two small children, Claire (4) and Celeste (1). We like to lie in our hammock and look at birds, airplanes and butterflies. We also work hard in a large vegetable garden that helps provide a lot of food for two families. This is one of the reasons that I have chosen to become a Cool School Teacher, it allows me to continue working with students, which I love to do, but also gives me the flexibility to be with my family.
