Course Outline

Scientific Inquiry

  Unit 5: Scientific Inquiry

Lesson 1: Alka Seltzer Lab
Lesson 2: Scientific Inquiry Final Project

Instructions for Unit
In this unit, you will be designing and conducting your own experiment into the natural world. Designing and conducting a good experiment takes a lot of time and thought. You will want to plan accordingly. To complete this unit, you will need to do the following:

1. Complete the Alka Seltzer Lab. Submit this to me as soon as possible so that I can give you feedback before you start writing your major project

2. Select a topic for study from the following list. Watch the videos, take the quizzes, and work your way through the activities provided. Note: the topic you pick for this unit cannot be the same topic that you picked for Unit 4.

  Fossils
  Invasive Species

3. After you have developed a background in your chosen subject, you will need to think of something that you will experiment with. While thinking of your experiment, be sure to consider what you can do in the time you have and with materials that you can provide (many experiments can be conducted with simple measuring tools, simple counting, or drawing). Also don't forget what you know about limiting the number of variables in your experiment. Experiments can be something you design to do indoors, or you might run an experiment outside. While working on your experiment, you may want to keep the scoring guide in mind so that you are sure to cover all the points that will be graded. Above all, please communicate with me frequently for help in designing a good experiment! When you are ready to begin, go to lesson 2 above for further instructions.
