Magistra

Introduction
Welcome to Latin Via Ovid

Abbreviation List

You need to know some Latin abbreviations that the Magistra will use in this course. Make vocabulary cards of the following. Put the abbreviation on one side of a small card (half of a 3X5 card will do), and put the English definition on the other side. You can carry these around with you and go over them when you are bored or waiting for someone or on a trip, etc.

A.D. Anno Domini (in the year of the Lord)

A.M. ante meridiem (before noon)

etc. et cetera (and so forth)

e.g. exempli gratia (for the sake of an example, or, for example)

i.e. id est (that is)

N.B. Nota Bene (note well)

op. cit. opus citandum (work cited before)

P.M. post meridiem (after noon)

P.S. post scriptum (post script or literally, written after)

Q.E.D. quod erat demonstrandum (that which was demonstrated)

SPQR Senatus Populusque Romanus (the Roman Senate and People)

vs. versus against

c, ca circa (about)
