Introduction
Welcome to Latin Via Ovid
Exploring
Latin Via Ovid
This high school Latin
course uses the text called Latin Via Ovid, which was originally
a college Latin text. It was chosen for this Internet Latin course,
however, because it is well organized, it has lots of exercises, it
has great stories from one of the best writers of all time, Ovid, and
it has lots of help throughout the book.
You, as a beginning
Latin student, however, will need to become familiar with all of the
parts of the book so you can use it easily. So, please turn to pagina
quinque, p. v, the Contents page, in the textbook, and we will start.
- Skim through all 40 chapters
right now even though you will only do 10 per semester for high school
credit. Each chapter, except the first, starts with a story originally
written by Ovid. There are basic grammar and syntax ideas which must
be learned. Last, there is an Etymology section where you will increase
your English vocabulary and make connections between English and Latin
vocabulary, culture, and society.
- Now turn to Appendix A, pages
419-437. All of the grammar forms for the entire
book
are listed here. I do not expect you to learn these immediately! However,
I will refer to the Appendices regularly during the course so you
need to know where they are. Now, please read page 419 on Parts of
Speech to refresh your memory on their definitions. You do not need
to worry about all of the Latin examples at the moment.
- Next turn to Appendices B and
C, pp. 439-453. Browse through these pages on the Roman Calendar,
the Greek and Roman Gods and Goddesses, Roman Chronology, and Latin
Poetry, ending with Appendix C, a famous, old Medieval Latin song.
Again, we will use these throughout the course, but you will not get
any Latin poetry until Chapter XIV.
- Turn please, now, to the vocabulary
sections of the book, pp. 455-487. You should immediately get in the
habit of looking up every Latin word you don't know (or can't remember),
either in these vocabulary sections or in the Latin dictionary I recommended
that you buy. Half of learning any language is learning the vocabulary
well. All of the Latin words used in the stories of this book are
in these vocabulary sections.
- Please turn to page 489, the
beginning of the Index. I do not know how much you will use this section
of the text, but at least you should know where it is. Now turn to
page 495 and learn something about the author of Latin Via Ovid.
Bene. Nunc incipiamus.
Good. Now let us begin.
