Check your e-mail regularly

Every time you check into this course, you'll need to check your e-mail for new announcements, etc. To do this, go to My Tools and click the E-Mail link. You'll need to type in your user name and your password (you can later change your password by selecting the key symbol at the bottom of the e-mail page).

Pace yourself

The due dates you set are not set in stone. You can submit assignments earlier or later. The dates you set are designed to help you progress through the course at your own pace. A timeline has been provided for this purpose. You have 10 months from the date you start the course to finish, unless your face-to-face school restricts you to a shorter time. Remember not to wait until the end! It's extremely obvious when an assignment was done at the last minute, and your grade will reflect that. I put the approximate amount of time an assignment should take you in the course timeline, but of course, individuals are different.

Review grading criteria for each lesson

The criteria I use for grading your artwork are at the bottom of each lesson page, so you know exactly what is expected of you for a grade. These criteria are based on the Oregon Art Standards and the LBL Scoring Guides. Be sure to review the criteria for each assignment before you do it, and again before you turn it in.

Turn in your work online or by mail

Most of the lessons include drawings that you will send to me for grading. You may scan your artwork or use a digital camera to photograph it and send it to me electronically, or you may choose to have it go the old-fashioned way with "snail" mail.

To send your work electronically:

Scan or digitally photograph your work, save the images to your computer, and then upload them to Educator using the assignment link in each lesson.

  1. First, set up a separate folder for this class on your computer. Name it drawing. Save all your files to this folder so that you can easily find them. If you want to be really organized, you might set up a subfolder for each lesson:

           drawing folder

  2. Before you scan or photograph your work, be sure to check it against the grading criteria for the lesson. If you need to revise it, better to do that before you go to the work of creating your digital files!
  3. Scan or photograph your work with a digital camera and save the images in JPG format in the folder(s) you set up. Please use this naming scheme for your files:

lesson number + your first name + your last initial + drawing number (if needed)

    Examples: L03joes01.jpg, L03joes02.jpg, L03joes03.jpg, or L05maryd.jpg

Substitute your own name and initial for "joes" or "maryd."

  4. After you've got your files saved, go to the lesson and click the Submit Your Work Here link to upload your files. If you're not sure how to do this, see how to upload an assignment.

To send your work by snail mail:

Send the original and one photocopy of your work to me. Please use the Assignment link in the lesson to tell me that you've mailed it.

  1. First, find or make a folder to keep all of your drawings in.
  2. Before photocopying your work, be sure to check it against the grading criteria for the lesson. If you need to revise it, better to do that now!
  3. Label your drawings with your name, the lesson number and assignment name, and the session number and drawing number if applicable (e.g., joe student - L3 gesture line, session 1, #1 of 6).
  4. Make two photocopies of your work, one for you and one for me to mark on.
  5. Send the original and one copy of your work to the address on the contact page. Include a postage-paid, self-addressed envelope if you would like your work returned. (Ideally, if you can get a hold of a digital camera or have access to a scanner, you can save yourself some postage.)
  6. Put your own copies in your folder so that you know where they are. Always keep a copy (and be able to find it!) of any work you send.
  7. Go to the lesson and click the Submit Your Work Here link to log in to Educator and get to the assignment page. Enter a comment telling me when you mailed your work, select the Submit For Grading checkbox, and then click Submit.
