The late dynasties saw civil war and aggression by neighboring peoples. In 664 B.C., the Assyrians finally conquered Egypt and Thebes. Under the control of Psamtik I, the region founded the XXVI Dynasty or the Saite Dynasty. For 140 years, Egypt enjoyed a final era of peace and prosperity and open trading with Greece. The XXVII Dynasty saw Persian rule in 525 B.C. and for 63 years maintained an uneasy independence. Finally, in 341 B.C., under the XXXI Dynasty, there came a second Persian conquest with the victory of Alexander the Great at Issus in 333 B.C.

Sculpture

Falcom, symbol of Horus The falcon was the symbol of the Egyptian god Horus, whose earthly person was the pharaoh. This piece was probably part of an inlaid decoration for a piece of furniture. It is made of mosaic glass, in which long rods of colored glass were heated and fused together to create this multi-colored falcon. The resulting mosaic cane was then cut into sections, each having the same design.

The process is much the same as the blending of fimo-clay beads today.

As it is with most life, few events happen independently of each other. And so it is with the Egyptian Empire. From 1700 - 1500 B.C., the early Minoan civilization was starting to develop, the Greek civilization from 800 - 150 B.C., and the Etruscan from 700 - 200 B.C.. We are going back a bit in time to visit the Minoan/ Greek / Etruscan Art so that we can follow how parallel civilizations and art styles developed.
