Introduction to - Artline: A Journey through Western Art History

Cuniform TabletYou are about to take off on a Journey ... an adventure through art and time. It is the goal of this course to offer opportunities to the student interested in art to explore the connection between the history of a culture and the art it produced, and to interpret how art reflected the character of that culture.

It is important to the development of one's own artistic style to understand the connection of cultural works of art and their influences. There are many forms of communication and the visual language, the world of images, is one of them. How various cultures have made sense of their world is recorded in their visual images.

This course is Internet interactive to allow you, the student-traveler, to explore and experience the art and architecture of a culture on a personal level by traveling across the miles in a virtual classroom to museums, art galleries, and actual architectural sites. As you travel, you will be introduced to historically recorded interpretations, and be asked to discuss your own, making interpretations about how and why works of art have been viewed in a particular way.

In this course, you will be studying the principal styles of Western Art, viewing the images of selected works. These artworks have been selected because they reflect the primary styles that formed in the major centers of civilization at moments of high cultural achievement.

To get the most from your travels, it is very important to keep in communication with the instructor, your "Trip Guide."

Always remember, no question is ever too small to be asked. In other cultures, life is sometimes viewed differently. Asking questions is important to understanding.
