Writing With Style allows you to design your own class to meet your personal writing needs and wants. You may choose to take this class for .1, .2, .3, .4, or .5 credits. You may choose to focus on 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 modes of writing.The modes are: Each lesson will include a brief definition of a specific mode, reading in that mode, and assignments to write in the mode. As the student turns in each assignment, the teacher will personally instruct him/her through e-mail in ways to improve his/her writing. Each student will be taught at his/her own rate and level, based on writing samples.
Point one credit will typically take four weeks to complete. The class usually will look like this:
Week 1
- Brief paper on why you are taking this class.
- Writing assignment #1, which includes prewriting, writing, seeking responses, revising, editing, and self-evaluation.
- Reading a short story or essay in the mode you are currently studying.
- Week 2
- Writing assignment #2, which includes prewriting, writing, seeking responses, revising, editing, and self-evaluation.
- Writing assignment #3, which includes prewriting, writing, seeking responses, revising, editing, and self-evaluation.
- Reading a short story or essay in the mode you are currently studying.
Week 3
- A culminating writing assignment that includes elements from the previous three assignments.
- Reading a short story or essay in the mode you are currently studying.
Week 4
- Point two to point four credits will be the above times 2, 3, or 4. Again, you will choose which mode(s) to study. If any of this information is confusing, please e-mail fawnbragg@mail.coolschool.k12.or.us for clarification.
Point five credits will typically take 18 weeks to complete. A class of mixed modes may look like this:
Week 1
- Introductory writing assignment
- Assignment #1
Write a brief paper on why you are taking this class.
Week 2
- Assignment #2
Week 3
- Assignment #3
Week 4
- Assignment #4
Week 5
- Extended writing assignment (#1)
Prewrite and write extended paper/short story.
Week 6
- Assignment #5
Week 7
- Assignment #6
Week 8
- Assignment #7
Week 9
- Extended prewriting assignment (#2)
Prewrite on short story or essay. Check for responses. Week 10
- Extended writing assignment
Write final draft of short story or essay.
Week 11
- Assignment #8
Week 12
- Assignment #9
Week 13
- Assignment #10
Week 14
- Cumulative prewriting assignment (#1)
Prewrite on cumulative paper. Week 15
- Cumulative writing assignment
Write first draft of cumulative paper. Week 16
- Cumulative paper--edit and revise
Edit and revise cumulative paper. Week 17
- Final draft of cumulative paper
Write final draft of cumulative paper.
Week 18
- Final Test
- Student Survey
